This medicine contains Ibuprofen which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which act to relieve pain and reduce swelling. It can be used to relieve headaches, rheumatic and muscular pain, pain from non-serious arthritic conditions, backache, migraine, period pain, dental pain, and neuralgia. It can also be used to reduce fever and relieve the symptoms of colds and flu.

Things you should know before taking ibuprofen tablets

Do not take ibuprofen 40mg Tablets if you:

  • are allergic to ibuprofen 400mg tablets, any of the other ingredients of the medicine, aspirin, or other related painkillers. Ibuprofen should be discontinued at the first appearance of skin rash, mucosal damage, or any other sign of allergic reactions.
  • have had a worsening of asthma, skin rash, itchy runny nose, or facial swelling when previously taking ibuprofen, aspirin, or similar medicines.
  • have (or have had two or more episodes of) a stomach ulcer, perforation or bleeding, or another gastric complaint due to NSAIDs. Do not take Ibuprofen 400 mg tablets if you currently have a peptic ulcer (ulcer in your stomach or duodenum) or bleeding in your stomach, or have had two or more episodes of peptic ulcers, or stomach bleeding or perforation in the past. There is an increased risk of the elderly having these side effects.
  • are taking other NSAID painkillers, or aspirin with a daily dose above 75mg
  • suffer from liver or kidney disease
  • suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure
  • are in the last 3 months of pregnancy

Each Ibuprofen 400mg Tablets contains:
Each film-coated tablet contains 400 mg
ibuprofen.
– The other ingredients are: Tablet core: Maize starch, starch, pregelatinised (maize starch), silica, colloidal anhydrous, croscarmellose sodium, talc, stearic acid. Film coating: Talc (E553b), polyvinyl alcohol, macrogol 3350 (E1521), titanium dioxide (E171).

Side effects 

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. With regard to the following side effects, it must be considered that they are largely dependent on the dose and that they vary from patient to patient.

The most commonly observed side effects are gastrointestinal in nature. Peptic ulcers, perforation or gastrointestinal bleeding, sometimes fatal, particularly in the elderly, may occur. Nausea vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence, constipation, indigestion, abdominal pain, melaena, haematemesis, ulcerative stomatitis, exacerbation of colitis and Crohn’s disease have been reported following administration.

The side effects are stated according to the frequency they occur. The following convention has been used:

  • Very common: may affect more than 1 in 10 people.
  • Common: may affect up to 1 in 10 people.
  • Uncommon: may affect up to 1 in 100 people.
  • Rare: may affect up to 1 in 1000 people.
  • Very rare: may affect up to 1 in 10000 people.

Caution before taking Ibuprofen 400mg Tablets:

  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking ibuprofen, especially if you are allergic to ibuprofen or aspirin.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to, or taking another pain killer, suffer from asthma, may be pregnant or receiving regular medical treatment.
  • Do not take if you have a stomach ulcer or other stomach disorders.
