Why do I need to floss my teeth?

If you don’t brush and floss your teeth regularly, you can experience a build-up of dental plaque, which is harmful to your teeth. When you brush, you remove a lot of the plaque that builds up on your teeth, but even the best toothbrush can struggle to reach into the gaps between your teeth and clear plaque from there. This is why flossing is an essential part of your dental care routine, helping you to clean plaque from the places a regular toothbrush can’t reach.

What is dental plaque?

Dental plaque is a colorless, sticky film that builds up on your teeth throughout the day. It’s made up of harmful bacteria that can damage your teeth if they’re left uncleaned. The best way to remove plaque from your teeth is to brush and floss your teeth regularly, following a proper dental care routine. This will help to reduce your chances of tooth decay and gum disease.

How often should I floss my teeth?

You should make sure to floss once or twice a day, flossing at the same time as you brush your teeth so you’ll always remember to keep up with it. If you floss at the end of the day then you’ll be removing plaque and food from between of your teeth which can build up during the day.

Directions for use

  1. Begin by breaking off a piece of floss that is roughly 45 cm in length.
  2. Wrap one end of the floss around your middle finger, and the other end around your other middle finger, leaving about 10 cm of floss in between.
  3. Use your thumbs and index fingers to guide the floss between your teeth, gently moving it back and forth to remove any plaque or debris.
  4. When you reach your gum line, curve the floss into a C-shape against one tooth and gently slide it into the space between your tooth and gum.
  5. Once the floss is beneath your gum line, gently move it up and down to remove any plaque or debris that may have accumulated there.
  6. Use a fresh section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth, and be sure to use a clean section of floss for each tooth to avoid spreading bacteria.
  7. As you move along your teeth, be sure to also floss the backs of your last molars, as these are often neglected and can harbor a lot of bacteria.
  8. Once you have finished flossing, rinse your mouth out with water or mouthwash to help remove any remaining debris.

Note: If you experience bleeding or discomfort while flossing, speak with your dentist or healthcare provider. They can help determine the cause and provide tips on how to floss more comfortably.
