Polytar Scalp Shampoo is a shampoo containing the active ingredient coal tar. This is a thick, heavy oil which can reduce scales, inflammation and itchiness.
Polytar Scalp Shampoo is used to treat scalp conditions such as psoriasis (thickened patches of inflamed, red skin, often covered by silvery scales), seborrhoeic dermatitis (red, scaly, itchy scalp),
eczema (itchy skin rash), itchiness and scaling due to these conditions and dandruff.

Directions for use

  1. Wet your hair:
  • Thoroughly wet your hair in the bath or shower with clean, warm (not hot) water.
  • Make sure your hair is completely saturated before applying the shampoo.
  1. Apply Polytar Scalp Shampoo:
  • Use enough shampoo so that the lather covers your scalp, hair and adjacent areas.
  • The amount of shampoo you need will depend on the length and thickness of your hair, but a quarter-sized amount should be enough for most people.
  • Apply the shampoo directly to your scalp and work it into a lather by massaging your scalp with your fingertips.
  1. Massage your scalp:
  • Gently massage your scalp and adjacent areas with your fingertips, taking care to not scratch or excessively rub your scalp.
  • Focus on areas that tend to get greasy or flaky, such as your hairline, temples, and the back of your head.
  • Massaging your scalp will help increase blood flow, which can promote healthy hair growth.
  1. Rinse your scalp and hair:
  • Thoroughly rinse your scalp and hair with clean, warm water until the lather is completely rinsed.
  • Make sure to rinse your hairline, the nape of your neck, and any other areas where shampoo may have collected.
  1. Apply a second treatment of Polytar:
  • Repeat steps 2 to 4, applying a second treatment of Polytar Scalp Shampoo.
  • Taking both of these shampoo applications into consideration, the total leave on time for the shampoo should be 3-5 minutes.
  • This will give the active ingredients in the shampoo enough time to work on your scalp and hair.

Coal Tar Solution 4% (w/w), Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Phosphate Dihydrate, Citric Acid Monohydrate, Benzyl Alcohol, Macrogol 150 Distearate, Hexylene Glycol, Oleyl Alcohol, Polyquaternium 10, Fruitier Timotei Fragrance, Purified Water.

Side effects 

Like all medicines, Polytar scalp shampoo can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. A small number of people have had side effects.

Stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

  • Eye irritation
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • eczema (itchy skin rash)
  • Skin irritation, skin may be dry, red or itchy, you may feel a burning sensation on the skin.
  • Abnormal hair texture.
