Hydrogen peroxide is used as a disinfectant and deodorant. It releases oxygen when applied to tissues, the effect lasts only as long as the oxygen is being released and is of short duration. The antimicrobial effect of the liberated oxygen is reduced in the presence of organic matter. It is used to cleanse wounds and ulcers in concentrations of up to 6%. Adhering and blood-soaked dressings may be released by the application of a solution of hydrogen peroxide. A 1.5% solution has been used as a mouthwash in the treatment of acute stomatitis and as a deodorant gargle.
Before using this medicine what you must know
Do not use this medicine:
- On normal skin.
- In closed body cavities or surgical wounds
- As an enema.
- To disinfect surgical Instruments.
- This product may bleach fabrics
For Pregnant or breastfeeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Hydrogen Peroxide Solution should not be used in pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding unless the doctor has told you to do so.
Directions for use
Care Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 6% 20 vols is for use as a mild disinfectant for minor cuts, wounds, and skin ulcers or as a mouthwash and gargle.
For skin disinfection – It can be used by adults, the elderly, and children.
As a mouthwash and gargle – It can be used by adults, the elderly, and children over 12 years.
Should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if advised by a doctor.
For skin disinfection – dress the wound in cotton wool soaked in the peroxide. Not for use on large, deep wounds.
As a mouthwash and gargle – dilute a portion of the peroxide with twice the amount of water e.g 5ml of peroxide and 10ml of water. Rinse the mouth for 2-3 minutes.
Repeat up to 3 times a day.
Ingredients
The active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide 6%. It also contains other ingredients such as phosphoric acid (E338), phenacetin and purified water.
Side effects
Like all medications, It can also cause side effects , although these don’t effect everyone
Possible side effects of strong solutions are:
- Irritating burns on the skin and other soft tissues of the body producing a white patch of dead tissue. The pain from this will disappear after about an hour.
- Temporary swelling of tongue.
- If you notice these or any other side effects, stop use and tell your doctor or pharmacist. They will tell you what to do.
