Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo is intended to treat dry, scaly scalp conditions including seborrhoeic eczema/dermatitis (red, scaly, and itchy patches on the skin) and pityriasis capitis (severe dandruff).

Following the updated GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council) guidelines, we are required to restrict the amount of Pharmacy Medicines, we dispense to one box per household per month.

Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo is a treatment for dry, scaly scalp conditions such as:
• seborrhoeic eczema / seborrhoeic dermatitis (patches of red, scaly, itchy skin), and;
• pityriasis capitis (severe dandruff).
• Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo is for use by adults, the elderly and children.
• The active ingredient in this product is benzalkonium chloride. It works by;
• loosening the scales from the scalp and lifting them from the hair, and;
• acting as a mild antiseptic to combat the micro-organisms that can make these scalp conditions worse.

Directions for use

  • Always follow the instructions provided in the leaflet or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse. If you are unsure about how to use the product, consult your healthcare provider.
  • Use Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo only for treating scalp conditions that it is intended for. Use it as a shampoo until your scalp looks and feels better, or as advised by your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.
  • You can use Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo daily if needed, and reduce the frequency of use to once or twice a week as your condition improves. You may need to use it occasionally thereafter.
  • Wet your hair thoroughly and apply a sufficient amount of shampoo to produce a rich lather. The amount required depends on the length and thickness of your hair.
  • Massage the shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips, ensuring thorough coverage. Remove as much lather as possible with your hands to take the scales off.
  • Rinse out the shampoo with water, and repeat the above steps if necessary. Rinse your hair thoroughly and dry it as usual.
  • If the shampoo comes into contact with your eyes, rinse them immediately with plenty of water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
  • If you use more shampoo than recommended, rinse your hair under running water and continue as instructed.
  • If you forget to use Dermax Therapeutic Shampoo occasionally, continue using it as usual when you remember.
  • If you do not see any improvement in your scalp condition after 4 weeks or if it seems to worsen, stop using the product and consult your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse.
  • If you have any questions regarding the use of this product, consult your healthcare provider.

What Dermax Therapeutic shampoo contains: 

The active ingredient is benzalkonium chloride (0.5% w/w).

The other ingredients are sodium lauryl ether sulfate, coconut diethanolamide, dilute hydrochloric acid, phenoxyethanol, sodium chloride, lauryldimonium hydroxypropyl hydrolysed collagen, coconut oil and purified water.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Dermax Therapeutic shampoo can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. This product has been specially designed for use on dry or problem skin, but in some rare cases it can cause irritant or allergic skin reactions on extremely sensitive skin. These rare effects tend to occur during or soon after the first few uses.

Warnings and precautions 

  • Take special care when using this product: Keep the undiluted shampoo, and the lather, away from the eyes.
  • Do not throw away any unused medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away any of medicines you no longer use. These measures will help to protect the environment.
  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the bottle and carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
  • Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
  • Always replace the cap tightly after use.
