EllaOne® morning after pill can prevent unplanned pregnancy. Effective for up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex has taken place, but more effective the sooner you take it. EllaOne® is intended for use in the case of emergency it is not meant to be a replacement for a regular method of contraception.

This medicine may be used between 72 and 96 hours after unprotected intercourse but efficacy decreases with time. There will be a delay for delivery. If you require the morning after pill immediately you should visit your GP or your local pharmacy.

Instructions for Taking ellaOne Emergency Contraceptive Tablet

Dosage

  • Always take the medicine as instructed by your healthcare professional or as mentioned on the leaflet.
  • If you are unsure about the dosage, consult your pharmacist or doctor.

How to take the tablet

  • Take one tablet orally as soon as possible and not later than 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sexual activity or contraceptive failure. Take the tablet without any delay.
  • It can be taken at any time during your menstrual cycle.
  • You can take the tablet at any time of the day, either before, during, or after meals.
  • If you are using medicines that may interfere with the efficacy of ellaOne (as mentioned in section 2 of the leaflet), ellaOne may not work effectively for you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. Your doctor may suggest another type of (non-hormonal) emergency contraceptive, such as Cu-IUD.

In case of vomiting after taking ellaOne

  • If you vomit (within 3 hours of taking the tablet), take another tablet as soon as possible.

If you have sexual intercourse again after taking ellaOne

  • If you have unprotected sex after taking the tablet, it will not prevent pregnancy. To avoid pregnancy, use condoms every time you have sex until your next menstrual period.

If your next menstrual period is delayed after taking ellaOne

  • It is normal for your next menstrual period to be delayed by a few days after taking the tablet.
  • However, if your period is more than 7 days late, or if it is unusually light or heavy, or if you experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, breast tenderness, vomiting or nausea, you might be pregnant. Take a pregnancy test right away and consult your doctor.

If you take more than the recommended dose of ellaOne

  • There have been no reports of harmful effects from taking a higher dose than recommended of this medicine. However, seek advice from your healthcare professional.

When taking Ella One, there is a chance of side effects. These include several different side effects, some of which are more common than others. Some potential side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle pain
  • Tiredness
  • Hot flushes
  • A migraine
  • Itching
  • A Fever
  • Red eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

Talk to your pharmacist, doctor or other healthcare professional before taking this medicine –

  • if your period is late or you have symptoms of pregnancy (heavy breasts, morning sickness), as you may already be pregnant;
  • if you suffer from severe asthma;
  • if you suffer from severe liver disease.

In all women, emergency contraception should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. There is some evidence that this medicine may be less effective with increasing body weight or body mass index (BMI), but these data were limited and inconclusive. Therefore, ellaOne is still recommended for all women regardless of their weight or BMI.
