Directions for use

Please read the table carefully for proper dosage and directions of using this medicine. Use the two-headed spoon provided in the pack.

Elderly:Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine as you may need to take a lower daily dose.

It is not recommended for Children under 12 months to take this medicine

Ingredients

Each 5 ml of Piriton Syrup contains:

2 mg of chlorphenamine maleate as the active ingredient. The syrup also contains sucrose, glycerol, ethanol, tingle flavour, peppermint oil, water and, as preservative, a mixture of methyl, ethyl and propyl hydroxybenzoates (E218, E214 and E216).
Important information about some of the ingredients of the syrup:

The syrup contains sucrose. Diabetics should take care when using the syrup. Long term use of the syrup could increase the risk of tooth decay, so clean your teeth regularly. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking the syrup.
The product contains 6.3% v/v ethanol (alcohol), i.e. up to 515 mg per adult dose, equivalent to 13 ml beer, 6 ml wine per dose. Harmful for those suffering from alcoholism. To be taken into account in pregnant and breast feeding women, children and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy.
Methyl, ethyl and propyl hydroxybenzoates (E218, E214 and E216) may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed)

Warnings and precautions

Do not take Piriton Syrup if you: Are allergic to antihistamines or to any of the ingredients listed above, Have taken drugs for depression called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) within the last 14 days.

Please see your doctor before you take the syrup if you: Have epilepsy, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, an overactive thyroid, very high blood pressure, or heart, liver or chest disease, Are taking medicines to treat anxiety or to help you sleep. Are taking any medicine containing phenytoin for epilepsy.

Taking the medicine with food and drink: As with other antihistamines the effects of alcohol may be increased.

Pregnancy and breast feeding: Medicines should not be used during pregnancy, or breast feeding, without seeking advice from a doctor.

Driving and using machines: If the syrup makes you feel drowsy, do not drive or operate machinery.

If you take more syrup than you should: If you (or someone else) swallow more than the recommended dose, or if you think a child has accidentally swallowed more than the recommended dose, contact your nearest hospital casualty department or your doctor immediately. Do not drive if it is you that has taken too much. Take the syrup with you so that the doctor can see what has been taken.

If you forget to take the syrup: If you forget to take the syrup, take a dose as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time to take the next one. Never take two doses together. Take the remaining doses at the correct time.

Side effects

Possible adverse reactions of a medication must always be taken seriously to ensure the safety and wellbeing of patients. Here are some important points to consider regarding the side effects of the medication:

  • Allergic reactions can occur in rare cases and may be severe. Symptoms include a raised and itchy rash (hives), swelling (especially of the face or mouth), and difficulty in breathing. In such cases, immediate medical attention is necessary.
  • Drowsiness and sedation are common side effects of Piriton Children’s Allergy Syrup and may affect more than 1 in 10 people.
  • Other common side effects that may affect up to 1 in 10 people include disturbances in concentration, uncoordinated movements, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, feeling or being sick, dry mouth, and fatigue.
  • Some patients may experience uncommon side effects, such as confusion, excitation, irritability, nightmares, low mood, low blood pressure, thickening of phlegm, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion or upset stomach, itchy skin, rash, sensitivity to the sun, muscle twitching, muscle weakness, difficulty passing water, chest tightness, ringing in the ears, changes in heart rhythm, low blood count, bruising, hepatitis (severe stomach pain, nausea or vomiting and loss of appetite and/or jaundice (yellow coloring of the skin or the whites of the eyes)).
  • Patients should always consult their healthcare provider if they experience any adverse effects after taking Piriton Children’s Allergy Syrup.
  • It is important to note that this list of side effects is not exhaustive, and patients should refer to the package insert for a complete list of potential adverse reactions.
  • Patients should also be advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery if they experience drowsiness or sedation as a side effect of the medication.
  • Patients should always take the medication as directed and not exceed the recommended dose.
  • If a patient misses a dose of Piriton Children’s Allergy Syrup, they should take the missed dose as soon as they remember unless it is almost time for their next dose. They should not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
  • If a patient has any questions or concerns about the medication, they should speak with their healthcare provider.
