Senokot 7.5/12 years syrups works as a stimulant laxative that gives short-term relief from occasional constipation.

Senokot contains Senna/Sennosides which work as a stimulant laxative for the short term relief of occasional constipation. Constipation is a fairly common and uncomfortable complaint. It usually
involves difficult or irregular bowel movements, accompanied by hard, dry motions which can be painful to pass. Laxatives do not help with weight loss.

 

For oral use. Adults, including the elderly and children 12 years old and over: the usual dose is one to two 5 ml spoonfuls at bedtime.
Children under 12 years old: Not to be given except on medical advice.
Where Senokot Syrup has been recommended it2 should be given as follows:
Children 6 years old and older: One to two 5 ml spoonfuls at night
under the guidance of a medical professional.

Senna Syrup containing in 5ml:

Calcium sennosides 7.5 mg

Each 5ml of Senokot 7.5mg/5ml Syrup contains calcium sennosides equivalent to 7.5mg total sennosides (calculated as Sennoside B).
The other ingredients are potassium sorbate (E202), methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propy parahydroxybenzoate (E216), maltitol liquid (E965), xanthan gum, anti-foam (Medical C) emulsion, prune flavour, citric acid anhydrous and purified water.

Abdominal cramps Low blood potassium level (hypokalaemia)
Over stimulation of the gut wall leading to a non-functioning large bowel (atonic colon)

The side effects listed above may not include all of the side effects reported by the drug’s manufacturer.

Avoid prolonged use. Also not to be used in blockage of the gut (intestinal obstruction).

Compressed and hardened faeces causing a blockage of the bowel (faecal impaction). This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients.
