Maalox Peppermint oral suspension – 250 ml is a highly effective antacid that contains two powerful medicines – aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These medications work together to provide relief from heartburn, inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), and excess stomach acid (indigestion). Additionally, Maalox Peppermint oral suspension – 250 ml can be prescribed by a doctor to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach or gut (intestine) when you have an ulcer.

This fast-acting antacid lowers the amount of acid in your stomach and provides relief quickly. Maalox Suspension is not suitable for everyone and should not be taken if you are allergic to aluminium hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide or any of the other ingredients listed in section 6. It is also not recommended if you have severe stomach pain, a partially or fully blocked bowel, or kidney problems.

If you are on a low-phosphorous diet, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Maalox Suspension. It is important to note that Maalox Suspension should not be taken at the same time as other medications, as it can affect the way they work. This includes over-the-counter and herbal medicines. Some medications that may be affected by magnesium hydroxide include those used to treat infections, malaria, and mental illness.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, it is important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Maalox Suspension. It is not recommended to take this medication during the first three months of pregnancy. Maalox Suspension contains sorbitol (E420), which is a source of fructose. If you or your child has an intolerance to some sugars or has been diagnosed with hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI), talk to your doctor before taking or receiving this medication.

Directions to take Maalox Suspension

  1. Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist and described in the leaflet.
  2. Shake the bottle well before use to ensure that the product is properly mixed.
  3. Take Maalox Suspension orally.
  4. If necessary, you can take it with water or milk.
  5. For adults, the elderly, and children aged 14 years or older:Take two to four 5ml teaspoonfuls, 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by your doctor.
  6. Maalox Suspension is not recommended for children less than 14 years old.

What Maalox Suspension contains

  • Each 5ml of suspension contains 175mg of aluminium hydroxide and 200mg of magnesium hydroxide as the active ingredients.
  • The other ingredients are: hydrochloric acid, citric acid monohydrate, peppermint oil, mannitol (E421), domiphen bromide, saccharin sodium, sorbitol liquid (E420), hydrogen peroxide and purified water.

Maalox Suspension is a white, mint flavoured suspension and is available in a 250ml polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle, with a polypropylene (PP) closure and polyethylene (PE/LDPE) liner.

Possible Side Effects of Maalox Suspension

  1. If you experience a red and lumpy skin rash, swollen eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue, itching, and difficulty breathing or swallowing, please stop taking the product immediately and see a doctor or go to the hospital straight away. This could be a sign of an allergic reaction.
  2. Constipation and diarrhea are uncommon side effects and may affect up to 1 in 100 people.
  3. Hypermagnesemia, which is an abnormally high level of magnesium in the blood, including observations after prolonged administration to patients with renal impairment, is a very rare side effect and may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people.
  4. Hypophosphatemia is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally low level of phosphate in the body. This may occur at high doses of the product or even at normal doses especially in patients with low phosphorous diets.
  5. Abdominal pain and hyperaluminemia, which is an electrolyte disturbance in which there is an abnormally elevated level of aluminum in the body, are possible side effects. However, the frequency of these side effects cannot be estimated from the available data.
