Sominex is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.

Sominex is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching, and other cold or allergy symptoms.

Sominex is also used to treat motion sickness, to induce sleep, and to treat certain symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.

Directions for use 

Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Take this medicine by mouth.

Adults, the elderly and children over 16

  • The recommended dose is one tablet at bedtime.
  • It may be taken up to one hour after going to bed when you cant go to sleep.
  • Do not use this medicine for more than 7 days in a row. If natural sleep does not return within 7 days or you have repeated bouts of sleeplessness talk to your doctor.

Ingredients

Each tablet contains Promethazine Hydrochloride Ph.Eur.2mg. It also contains lactose.

Side effects 

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Elderly people may be more susceptible to the side effects or confusion when taking this medicine.

Serious side effects 

If you think you have any of the following side effects or symptoms, stop using this medicine immediately and see a doctor as soon as possible.

  • Allergic reactions which cause difficulty in breathing, swelling of the mouth or skin, vomiting or stomach pain.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
  • Low blood pressure (dizziness and lightheadedness).
  • Palpitations or abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Blurred or reduced vision or pain in the eye.
  • Listlessness and lack of energy.

Warnings and precautions

Causes drowsiness. Do not drink or operate machinery. Avoid alcoholic drink. Do not give to children under the age of 16. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
