What Reliviate Gel is and what it is used for?
Reliviate Gel is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (often shortened to NSAIDs) which are applied to the skin to reduce inflammation (swelling) and pain.
How does Reliviate Gel works?
It works by blocking the production of chemicals (prostaglandins) which the body produces in response to injury or certain diseases. These chemicals would otherwise go on to cause swelling and pain. The Gel can be used to treat joint pain caused by mild, non-serious arthritis, pain or swelling from a sprain, back strain or bruise.

This medicine may not be suitable for you. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have asthma, active peptic ulcer, liver and kidney problems or if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding.
How to Use Reliviate Gel?
This gel is designed for topical (on the skin) application only, should not be consumed orally and must be kept out of reach of children. The recommended dose for adults is:
- Squeeze about one and a quarter inches (3 cm) of the gel onto your finger or hand and gently massage it onto the skin around the injury. If you have more than one injury, repeat on each area.
- Apply the gel three times a day (24 hours) as required.
- Apply each dose at least 4 hours apart.
- Wash your hands before & after using the gel.
- There is a seal on the nozzle of the tube.
- Break this seal by pushing the pointed end of the cap onto the nozzle.
- Do not cover the area where the gel has been rubbed in with dressings or bandages.
- If symptoms do not improve after 7 days or if they worsen, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
- Do not use for more than 14 days unless your doctor tells you to.
- Do not use in children or young people less than 18 years of age.
What Reliviate Gel contains?
Reliviate Gel contains piroxicam 0.5% w/w in a gel. It also contains 150mg of propylene glycol in each one and a quarter inch (3 cm) application which is equivalent to 150 mg / 1 g of gel. It also contains propylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol, macrogol 7 glyceryl cocoate, hypromellose, sodium hydroxide, sodium metabisulphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and purified water.
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause the side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Serious allergic reactions are very rare. If you experience any of the following side effects stop using the gel and speak to your doctor immediately:
- Breathelessness, Wheeziness, Difficulty breathing.
- Rash, Bruising or Blistering of the skin.
- Swelling of the eyelids, face or lips.
- Itching (especially affecting your whole body).
- Serious skin reactions such as severe rash involving reddening, peeling and swelling of the skin that resembles severe burns (toxic epidermal necrolysis), severe form of skin rash with flushing, blisters or ulcers which may be accompanied with flu-like symptoms.
- Other side effects may include skin becoming red, sore, itchy, painful, numb or tingly.
- Feeling sick, upset stomach or abdominal pain.
