Derbac M Liquid is a medicated emulsion formulated with Malathion as the active ingredient. This liquid is primarily used for the complete removal of head lice, pubic lice, and their eggs, as well as for treating scabies in adults, the elderly, and children aged 6 months and above.

Malathion liquid contains an insecticide. It kills insects (parasites) that live on humans, such as head lice, the scabies mite and crab lice. Two applications of treatment with malathion liquid are needed, one week apart.

Directions for use

  • Always follow the instructions provided in the leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are unsure about anything, consult with your doctor.
  • If one member of your family needs treatment for lice, check all family members for lice with a detector comb and treat if necessary.
  • For adults, elderly people, and children aged 6 months and above who need treatment for head lice:
    • Apply enough liquid to dry hair to ensure the scalp is completely covered. Spread the liquid evenly from root to tip.
    • Leave the hair to dry naturally in a well-ventilated and warm room.
    • After 12 hours, or the next day, if preferred, shampoo the hair normally.
    • While the hair is wet, use a nit comb to remove dead lice and eggs (nits).
    • Repeat the treatment after 7 days.
  • For treatment of pubic lice:
    • Apply the liquid to the entire skin surface.
    • Pay special attention to hairy areas, including beards and mustaches. Avoid applying to any area above the neck.
    • Leave on for at least one hour before washing it off, preferably leaving it on overnight.
    • Repeat the treatment after 7 days.
  • For treatment of scabies:
    • Apply the liquid to the entire skin surface.
    • In adults, applying above the neck may not be necessary. If treating children under 2 years old, apply a thin film of the liquid to the scalp, face, and ears while avoiding the eyes and mouth.
    • Do not wash or bathe for 24 hours. If you must wash your hands or any other parts during this time, immediately reapply the treatment to those areas.
    • Repeat the treatment after 7 days.
  • No special sterilization of clothing is necessary. Ordinary laundering or dry cleaning with hot iron pressing is sufficient.
  • The infestation will be cleared by the treatment, but itching and rash may persist for up to 7 days. Apply an anti-irritant cream if necessary.
  • All family members and close contacts should be treated simultaneously.
  • Children under 6 months old should not use this medicine unless advised by a doctor.
  • If you accidentally swallow the liquid or get it in your eyes:
    • Only use this medicine on your skin. Protect your eyes at all times by covering them with a towel. If the liquid enters your eyes, wash them out with plenty of water.
    • If you accidentally swallow the liquid, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

The active substance of Derbac M liquid is malathion. It contains 0.5% by weight. The other ingredients in Derbac M liquid are: methylhydroxybenzoate (E218), propylhydroxybenzoate (E216), emulsifying wax, potassium citrate, citric acid, perfume HT52 and water.

Side effects

Like any medication, Derbac M can have side effects, although not everyone will get them. These side effects include:

  • Skin irritation
  • Severe allergic reactions (including difficulty breathing, dizziness, swelling of face, throat and eyes)
  • Chemical burns

Warnings and precautions

  • It should not be used more than once a week and for not more than 3 consecutive weeks.
  • Prolonged or repeated use with this product should be avoided.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and inside the ears.
  • If you are a healthcare professional treating a large number of patients, then wear protective plaster or rubber gloves.
  • Do not use on broken or secondarily infected skin.
  • This product should not be swallowed. If ingested, contact a doctor or hospital immediately.
